Ed Young On Recognizing True Beauty
Ed Young Cites Unfair Pressure On Girls
As celebrated Pastor Ed Young describes, it’s no secret that society places pressure on women to look a certain way. Popular-culture is awash with women who seem to have come out of the same mold. And young girls are expected to either live up to this standard model, or wallow in their own self-pity.
Ed Young finds fault with this model for two main reasons. First of all, the standard set by actresses and models is both unrealistic, and unhealthy. Secondly, it is a relatively well-known fact that beauty is in the eye of the beholder; there is no standard model of beauty. Despite these truths, young women throughout America stress themselves out trying to fit the mold. Ed Young notes that these stresses damage the self-esteem of young girls, which can lead to other problems.
Ed Young: Low Self-Esteem And Peer-Pressure
Young girls with self-esteem issues are more likely to succumb to peer-pressure than young girls with confidence. Those who do not love themselves will inevitably look to compensate for that lack of love elsewhere. This desire can lead adolescent girls to make enormous mistakes, such as using drugs or engaging in premarital sex. Ed Young believes that we can prevent the occurrence of such problems by tackling the issue at the source.
Ed Young’s Beauty-Full
In his book Beauty-Full, Ed Young promotes the philosophy that inner beauty is more important than outer beauty. Attractiveness is not solely based on outer appearance, and this philosophy rings true to a majority of men. In fact, many men prefer women who are intelligent, moral and kind, over women who are skinny, plastic and dumb.
Ed Young believes that we should encourage adolescents to stop mimicking trashy, self-important tabloid-queens. Instead, we should promote intelligence, morality, and self-confidence.
Ed Young’s Personal Mission
As the father of beauty-full daughters, Ed Young feels it is his responsibility to address self-esteem issues among adolescent women. “The truly heart-wrenching nature of these self-esteem issues becomes all the more apparent when you have kids, especially girls,” Ed Young, notes. “A father can easily tell his girls that they are beautiful, but some women don’t get that from their dads. That’s why addressing these matters biblically is so important.”
